Bristlecone pine, Pinus aristata, growing on Telescope Peak at Death Valley, California and on bluffs at Cedar Breaks, Utah, 10,000 Feet, July 13, 2007. These pines grow on the badlands at the South end of the monument cliffs in picturesque forms. Trunk thickness up to 2 meters, needles in bunches of five. Needle length 29 mm. Crystals often seen on Colorado Bristlecones not observed on these needles. Bark flakes 2 by 3 cm. Cone photo, old cone 67 mm by 50 mm. New cone 59 mm by 22 mm. Lodgepole pine, pinus contorta, forest and ecosystem, growing on a ridge above Taylor Creek, North of Almont, Colorado, elevation 9,150 feet, September 1, 2007. Tree height estimated at 80 feet, trunk diameter 25 cm., needles in twos, length 44 mm. Needles have bottle brush look. Bark is dark with burnt appearance, flakey in small 15x10 mm plates.

Limber pine, Pinus flexilus, growing atop bluffs at Cedar Breaks National Monument,Utah, 10,400 Feet, July 13, 2007. Height about 10 meters. Twigs very flexible, needles in fives, length 55 mm. Trunk diameter is 20 cm. Bark is smooth. Cones are 9 cm. high and 6.5 cm. wide.

Tree height 80 feet, trunk diameter 50 cm, bark flakey plates, very long and 4 to 8 cm. wide, needles in bunches of three, length 125 mm, thickness 1.5 mm, cones male 15 x 6 mm, female 100x 70 mm. Pines typically have multiple needles.
