Atriplex, the Saltbushes, grow in open, often alkaline desert environments. The species below range in habitat from open plains (canescens) through alkaline flats (concertifolia) and shale slopes (garretti), to barren desert pavement (hymenelytra). Saltbushes occur in southwestern desert regions and bring memories of open skys and broad vistas.

Atriplex canescens (greyish), Four Wing Saltbush has distinctive four winged fruits. Staminate and pistillate flowers occur on separate plants. Saltbush is a common species on dry, somewhat alkaline plains like the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado.

Garrett’s Saltbush, Atriplex Garrettii, common though scattered on gray shale slopes from 5,700 t0 7,200 feet, Book Cliffs, North of Palisade,Colorado. Plant height 1.2 meters, lower stems gray, woody, leaves fascicled in 3’s or alternate, seeds odd 2 winged V shaped configuration. leaves stem length 14 mm,w 8 mm. pods V width 9 mm. Grows on silty shale, but not on nearby sandstone substrate.
