Silver cholla, Opuntia echinocarpa (hedgehog fruit), growing on gravel fans in death valley at, for death valley, a moderate elevation 760 feet. Very densely spined,
much denser than Cylindropuntia imbricata. Plant height is 61 cm. stems seem smal, l dia 24 mm, aeroles 14 mm apart, on raised areas of stem, spines 37 mm long with 1-3 central and 20 radial spines. Spines are light coloredand appear gold in sunlight.
