Abies concolor, White Fir, growing at Oso Pass, West Face of the Sandia Mountains, 9,340 feet, May 30, 2003. Characteristics include light colored single needles and a habit of growing near streambanks and in canyons. Earle (conifers.org) notes that several somewhat variable populations of concolor occur which could justify separation into different varieties. Differing populaton clusters occur in California, Utah, and Colorado- New Mexico.

Cork Bark Fir, Abies bifolia, growing often in the shade of picea engelmanii around Summit Lake above Crested Butte, Colorado. Needles 16 mm. long by 2 mm. wide. New growth 40 mm long.Trunk diameter is 18 cm. Earle (www.confiers.org) indicates a North-South transition from Abies lasiocarpa in Alaska to Abies bifolia as one moves south to Washington state.
